Seasonal Guide
Fall is the most important season for your lawn. What you do between September and the first hard freeze in Southwest Michigan directly determines how your yard comes out of winter. A properly prepared lawn bounces back green and strong in spring. One that goes into winter neglected often needs serious rehab by April.
Here's everything your yard needs before the snow hits.
One fall cleanup isn't enough for most Michigan properties. Leaves drop in waves — maples first, then oaks and late trees through November. A single cleanup in early November misses the first wave, which has already been sitting on your lawn for weeks by that point.
The best approach for Niles and surrounding areas: one cleanup in mid-October and a final pass in November after the oaks drop. If your property has heavy tree coverage, you might need three rounds. Leaves left matted under snow will smother grass and create bare patches that take months to recover.
Your last mow of the season matters. As you approach the end of the season, gradually lower your cut height over the last few mows — finishing around 2 to 2.5 inches. Shorter grass going into winter is less prone to snow mold and matting. Avoid going too short all at once, which stresses the root system before dormancy.
🍂 Timing tip: In Niles, MI, the last mow is typically mid to late November. Watch the forecast — you want to get that final cut in before consistent freezing temperatures arrive.
Fall is the best time of year to aerate a Michigan lawn. Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil from the ground, relieving compaction, improving drainage, and allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the root zone more effectively. It also preps the soil for overseeding.
If your lawn gets heavy foot traffic, has clay soil, or shows signs of thatch buildup, fall aeration is worth the investment. In Southwest Michigan, the ideal window is September through mid-October when the soil is warm enough for recovery but the heat of summer has passed.
Fall is actually the best time to overseed — better than spring. Soil is warm, competition from weeds is lower, and the cooler air helps new grass establish before winter. Pair overseeding with aeration for best results: the seed falls into the aeration holes and has direct soil contact.
For bare or thin patches, loosen the soil surface, spread seed at the recommended rate, and keep it moist until germination. Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue varieties perform well in Southwest Michigan's climate.
Fall leaf cleanup and gutter cleaning should happen at the same time. Clogged gutters going into winter cause ice dams that back up under shingles and damage your roof, fascia, and foundation. By the time leaves stop falling in November, your gutters are usually packed.
At Leaf-Les Lawncare, we offer gutter cleaning as an add-on to fall cleanup — it's efficient to knock both out in one visit and makes sure nothing is left behind.
If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, it needs to be blown out before the first hard freeze. Water left in the lines freezes, expands, and cracks the pipes. In the Niles area, the window is typically mid-October through early November. Don't wait until the last minute.
A late-season fertilizer application (often called a "winterizer") is one of the highest-ROI things you can do for your lawn. Applied in October or early November, it feeds the roots going into dormancy and promotes early green-up in spring. Look for a fertilizer that's lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium for best results.
Cut back perennials, remove annuals, and add a layer of mulch around plant bases and tree roots before the ground freezes. The mulch acts as insulation, protecting roots from freeze-thaw cycles and keeping moisture in through winter. Two to three inches is enough — don't pile it against trunk bases.
